Finished Storyboards

This is our final story boards, this would help us when shooting our music video. This would also help our planning stage alongside with other factors that we need to consider doing during this week.

Costume Ideas

These are some ideas for the costume for my artist from people in my college as they are my target audience. I would Want my artist to wear something typical and dark in colour e.g. Black, grey and navy this would demonstrate the young age of the artist and generally where they are from. The First photo is someone dressed smart, this can be used to signify the start of something new for the artist.

Location Ideas / Recces

Dalston: The reason why i decided to pick this location in Hackney is because there is a lot of artwork. This would be an ideal place for my artist to stand as he is generally going to be alone so this wall would be a nice background for certain scenes.

Hackney Central: The reason why i decided to choose this location is because the music video is generally talking about Hackney. This is the 'main' part of Hackney that people would generally refer to. Using this in my video would demonstrate the location and where the artist grew up/started. This could be used to represent certain lyrics.

Hackney Downs Studios: This could be where the artist goes to record his music, or where his music career starts. This is also based in Hackney which could also connote his area and where he comes from as a person and reasons to why he acting the way he does.

Clapton Station: this could be used to represent an area in hackney in which the artist talks about in his lyrics.

Westfield Stratford: This would be used for the last scene where the actor can demonstrate the start of something new, in a different location. This would be used for the outro scene and this scene would be in colour representing the start of something new.

Discussion About Props

During Lesson me and Kedeidra was talking about the prop Money which would need to be used during a scene. As we dont have stacks of money we decided we are going to print out the money in order for our scene to work.

Story Board Process

Today In Lesson me and my group started planning our story board for our music video scene by scene. Thos allowed us to talk about how we wanted our video to be broken down, it allowed idea from both sides to be demonstrated and it allowed us to actually think carefully about the shots used in each scene and how it is going to be edited.

Break Down Of Music Video

This Is a basic breakdown of how i want certain scenes to be, these were my first thoughts without talking to my group. This made sure that i had some ideas to present in which we can agree/discuss in class before officially starting our storyboard. The jump/cut edits was an idea from my case study 'SNE-Like us' as it adds an effect to the start of the music video. It would also connote that the artist is going through a rough time why the scene should be broken. The use of the black and white effect idea comes from my case study 'Ciara-Like a boy' and the inspiration video 'Drake-Energy' which was mentioned in the pitch. The use of black and white in our video could connote the rough times, struggle and the break down that the artist is going through. I think that our music video would consist of a range of fades and cut transitions as put song is slow which would emphasise the struggle the artist is going through.

New Treatment/Initial Plans

Due To our audience feedback back, my group decided on the song SNE- Set it off and developed our initial in more detail of what we would like in our music video and explained our narrative in more detail. This is a brief breakdown of our music video as the scenes are very basic at this stage.
The reason why our audience feedback was very useful was because the class was a small percentage of our target audience which initially sets the base for the rest of the target audience when deciding on a music video that they would be attracted to.

Audience Feedback Video

Presenting our initial ideas as a pitch in front of the class allowed us to make a decision on what song to choose for our actual music video as the class fitted a small part of our target audience in both song choices, it also allowed us to make changes for improvement before making our music video. The audience decided that the second song choice: SNE - set it off, would be a more productive music video as it relies on less people meaning they would be reliable and we would have less trouble chasing a group of people to be in the video. Also the locations would be more accessible than the other song choice. Despite the fact that the audience was more interested in the first song 'Not3s ft Dnote - toju mi' my group decided on the feedback for both and the most achievable method for us to carry out. Also the lyrics for the SNE song is at a slow pace which means our actor can learn the song quickly.

Initial Ideas

My Group, Kedeidra & I, decided to demonstrate our first plans on a prezi in preparation for our pitch that would be presented later during this week.

Case Study 3.

Tion Wayne Ft Afro B - Bae. Genre: Afrobeats.
This Music video is about romantice love, generally the way how the artist is treating and taking care of his girlfriend. This could be seen as young love due to the song title 'bae' meaning girlfriend in the younger generation.
This music video has some performance elements due to the shots od the artist taking his girl out to places and some shots of where the artist and the actors are dancing in the video. I would also say that this music video also has an narrative element as the artist is geneally telling a story about taking care of his girl in relation to the lyrics of the song.
The Theme of this video could be seen as romantice love as the artist used motifs such as resturants, hotels and the way the artist and actor is together romantically. I would also say they this video has some theme elements if enjoyment due to the artist and actors dancing together and the shots used to demostrate their emotions together. I would also say that there is a theme of wealth due to the cars, jewellery, hotels and restaurants demostarted throughout the video.
The representation of the artist could connote that he is young and wealthy due to the cars, jewellery, resturants, hotels and the costumes used in the music video. It could also connote that he is the main and dominant one in the relationship as he is doing majority if the lip syncing and he is taking care of his girlfriend in a good and controlling way.
There was a use of slow motion, this is a special effect which is used to emphasis certain shots in the music video, this was not used often throughout the video. There was a range of fast jump shots used throughout the video. This could essentially connote tha rough times in there relationship but he still takes care of his girlfriend regardless. There was a range of close up shots in the car and jewellery to connote wealth. The establishing shot set the scene during the shots of the car, resturants and hotels.
The Target audiencd of this video would primarily aimed at males aged around 15-25 due to the fact it is about taking and treating girls and due to the song title 'Bae.' There could also be a secondary audience of females aged 15-25 due to the fact that the song is about how their gender would/should be treated by their boyfriend or husband.
The ideas that i would take from this video when doing my video is the performance side as it demonstrates the relationship by the way the shots were edited together e.g. Fast pace and slow pace edits. I would also make reference to the storyline as it could relate to one of my song choices if I decide to use that song for my music video.

Case Study 2.

Ciara - Like a Boy. Genre: R&B/Hip-Hop
This video is about how boys treat/respond to girls and if the role should change depending on your gender, hence the name 'Like a Boy.'
I would say that this music video has some performance based elements as the artist is shown throughout the music video and there is a lot of dancing throughout the video which enhances the performance side of the music video. I would also say that this music video has a narrative element as the music video and lyrics tell a story about women changing roles into men which is generally showing a contrast between women and men due to the changes of the artist as both genders throughout the music video.
The theme of this music video role changing. This is represented through the change of costume between women and men, hats bandannas, tattoos, dresses, heels and the differences between the dancers in relation to the gender the artist is presenting.
The representation of the artist could connote that males are generally more dominant as a character, but in relation to girls they could be quite laid back. This is demonstrated through the use of wide shots when the female is talking to the male and when there is a close up at the start of the video on the rings and tattoos on the artist’s hand which is followed by a wide/medium shit showing the dominant side of a male. The fact that the artist is doing all of the lip syncing throughout the video as both genders demonstrates the contrast between the two genders as the song lyrics do not change in tone in relation to the gender the artist is presented as. The artist is also the lead performer in the video as she is located in the middle and generally at the front when dancing, this could also be a way of her showing her dominant side and the contrast between genders.
The fact that the music video is shot in black and white throughout the whole video could also suggest that the way you talk to people shouldn't change no matter what gender you are. There was a lot of cut away edits and jump shots which could hide the fact that boys/men can be sensitive and they don't need to carry themselves as always being dominant especially in a relationship.
The target audience would be aimed primarily at females aged 21-35 due to the fact it is about official, dominant relationships and it demonstrates that men should respect women. The secondary audience would be males age 21-35 due to the song title and it is generally talking about men in general towards women. There could also be a tertiary audience of young teenagers aged 15-20 as some of the lyrics could relate to everyday friendships.
The ideas I could take from this music video is the performance element; the dancing. The way the actors/artist is dressed e.g. suits and dresses. I could also use the range of edits and the black and white effect.

Case Study 1.

SNE ft. Careless - Tell Me (Like Us).  Genre: Grime
This Music Video is about a group of boys that are friends, which is known as a team in this video. It shows how they all get along and talks about activities which may be involved in their friendship group due to their young age and generation.
I would say that this video contains some conceptual elements as the video contains some use of special effects at certain points of the video. Also the way some parts of the video has been edited creates an abstract look in certain shots when out together which doesn't match the lyrics to the song.       This video also contains a performance element throughout the video. This is demonstrated through the way the artist and his friends use their hands to show the lyrics being said. Also the fact that the artist is mostly located in the middle with his team dancing behind him also emphasizes the performance element as it connotes enjoyment.
The general theme in this video is friendship and enjoyment which is represented by people dancing, red cups which connotes partying (this is essentially the motifs of this video) and alcohol.           The Representation of the artist could connote that he is the leader of his 'team' and is the main one due to the fact that he is mostly located at the front or in the middle of people located around/behind him. He is also doing most of the lip syncing even though there are some shots were other people and Careless are lip syncing lyrics.
There was a use of special effects in the video. The main effect used through this video was slow motion use to emphasis certain shots and the start of the video. The start if the video had jump shots which was in sync with the instrumental beat of the song. There was also a range of establishing shots to show the Mise-en-scene of the apartment and alcohol located on the table. There was also elements of close ups and extreme close ups on the artist himself, the red cups and the alcohol which relates to the theme. There was also some elements of panning, tracking and I think hand held shots.
The Target Audience would primarily be young/middle aged boys aged around 15-25 years due to the fact that the lyrics is talking about a 'team' which is mostly associated with boys. However, there could be a secondary audience of females aged around the same as the boys as the video contains enjoyment/party elements, because of the beat of the song or the concept/performance side of the video.
Ideas I could take from this video to use in my own music video would be the use of the special effects (slow motion), the range of edits, camera angles and the performance side of the video.

'Happy' Music Video

This is our final version of our music video 'Happy.'The fact that it was a practice task it is not as professional due to the fact that we only had 2 lesson to record and 2 lessons to edit our music video however this task taught us a lot through editing and also filming as mistakes were spotted at a early stage meaning that they should not occur in our actual music video to the song of our choice.

Problems When Recording/Editing

One Problem We Faced When Recording Is That The Camera Was Rotated Vertically Rather Than Horizontal Which Left Us With A Black Border Around Our Last Frames. This Developed Our Understanding When Editing And Taking Our Shots. This Mistake Would Help Us With Out Real Video As It Was Recognised At Early Stages Rather Than Later.

Music Video Practice Task

Yesterday During our media lesson. Me and my team decided to go out on the field to shoot our music video to the song choice of 'Happy' this was because in our plan we wanted a well lit natural lighting to emphasis the word 'happy.' The camera we used was a DSLR camera and which allowed us to get the right quality and focus for our shoot. These are some pictures of us setting up the camera and filming some parts of our music video.
